Chemicals to avoid

Our products have not added the following chemicals

Paraben Used as: preservatives. It prevents fungus and bacteria to thrive in skin care products.

Why it’s harmful: Paraben has been blamed to cause estrogen disruption, which causes breast cancer and other reprodcutive problems.

What to use instead: Look for products that contain Sorbid Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Benzoic Acid, Sodium Benzoate or Dehydroacetic Acid

Phthalates Used as: plasticiser. It is a common industrial chemical used in PVC plastics, solvents and synthetic fragrances

Why it’s harmful: they are endocrine disruptors linked to problems of the reproductive system, including decreased sperm motility and concentration in men and genital abnormalities in baby boys. They’ve also been linked to asthma and allergies

What to use instead: “fragrance” or “parfum” on a label almost always means phthalates. What you want to see are claims like “no synthetic fragrance” or “scented with only essential oils” or “phthalate-free.”

Formaldehyde releasers Used as: antimicrobial/antifungal preservative

Why it’s harmful: potential allergens and sensitizers

Triethanolamine Used as: buffering agent, masking and fragrance ingredient and surfactant, in addition to its primary use as a pH adjuster

Why it’s harmful: human skin, immune system and respiratory toxicant, high doses of triethanolamine have caused liver, bladder, and testicular cancer in laboratory animals

Sulphates Used as: cleansing agents in skincare and hair-care products ( SLS and SLES are the ones most commonly used)

Why it’s harmful: potential allergens and sensitizers

What to use instead: cocosulfate, made from coconut oil,

Silicone (dimethicone) Used as: a silicone-based polymer to provide a smooth application, fills in uneven texture and fine lines in skincare products, smooth hair and provide better comb-through in conditioners and detanglers

Why it’s harmful: may cause dryness, slight irritation and allergic reactions

Synthetic Fragrances Used as: fragrance

Why it’s harmful: Ingredient not fully labelled; it is known to cause significant immune or allergenic effects

What to use instead: It is recommended to use fragrance free product for baby

BHA, BHT Used as: Preservatives

Why it’s harmful: Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) like parabens, are used as preservatives. BHA and BHT can cause endocrine disruption, that screams out cancer and other reproductive issues.

What to use instead: Tocopherol

Triclosan Used as: anti-bacterial

Why it’s harmful: According to studies, Triclosan has been increasingly linked to skin irritation, endocrine disruption, resistance to bacteria among others.

What to use instead: Essentials oils (Lavender, citrus, etc.)

Propelyne Gycol Used as: It is used to absorb water and maintain moisture in some cosmetics and skin care products.

Why it’s harmful: can cause skin irritation.

What to use instead: Glycerin, sorbitol

Mineral oil Used as: a moisturizer. Manufacturers however, opt for mineral oil not because of its benefits but because of its low cost, It is a form of petrochemicals

Why it’s harmful: It seals off your skin. Our skin helps in the detoxifying process by producing sweat. Using mineral oil is like covering your skin with plastic wrap. It won’t allow the skin to “breathe” to perform its normal functions. This causes premature aging, breakouts and skin irritations.

What to use instead: Cold pressed oils and butters

Retinol Used as: a form of Vitamin A, anti-aging

Why it’s harmful: It increases a person’s sensitivity to UV Rays because of its peeling effect. It can also cause birth defects when a pregnant woman takes retinol more than the recommended 1,000 retinol equivalent.

What to use instead: Aloe vera, Hyaluronic acid
